2017 Pinewood Derby

Date: Wednesday, March 15, 2017
Time: 6:30pm – 8:00pm
Where: Rose Hill Elementary, 128th Avenue Northeast, Kirkland, WA (map)
Room: Gym/Cafeteria

Come and race your pinewood derby car you’ve made! It is time to get those cars shaped, shined and ready for racing! This event is one of the highlights of the year! There are rules for the pinewood derby, you can find the rules here.

6:30 PM – Arrive early, skip dinner at home, and join us for pizza!

The first 30 minutes of the meeting will involve getting your cars registered, inspected, weighed on the OFFICIAL scale and lined up for racing. The pack is providing Costco pizzas and bottled water. There will be a few games to keep the boys entertained and there is a buzz about the room as the boys see each others cars, decide whose is the fastest and watch the track master set up his elaborate track.

Remember the rules!  All cars must be weighed on OUR OFFICIAL SCALE.  Even if you weighed your car at home and it was spot on, you may have to make adjustments once you weigh the car on our official scale.  We advise making your car a little light and adding weight if necessary once you arrive here. There will be glue guns and some extra weights to help get cars perfected and race ready. If you cannot arrive on time, please send your car with a friend to make sure you get it registered!

 7:00 PM – Racetime!

There will be two heats. In the first heat, every registered car races on each of the 4 tracks. The worst time for each car is dropped and the den awards are given based on these times. The fastest cars move on to the second heat in which the cars race again on all 4 tracks to determine the final winners of the pinewood derby.

 7:50 PM – Awards!

There are awards for fastest cars by den and overall. In addition, we are looking for a parent who would like to determine the fan favorite car for design. Let us know if you have an eye for design and would like to gather feedback from scouts and adults on the cutest/craziest/wackiest/most cleverly designed car.

If you have any questions, please contact David Williams.

New to this year’s derby…LEGO cars! David Williams is putting together wheeled bases in which LEGO’s can be added to create a competitive car. This is a great opportunity for scouts to invite a friend who is interested in scouting and that friend can build a Lego car before the race and participate. The Lego built cars will be a non-award category and inspection will be kind of relaxed, but what a fun way for non-scouts or siblings to easily participate in this event. As a warning, the LEGO built cars will need to be returned at the end of the event. There should be about 10 available.
