Pack Newsletter – July 2017

Thank you to everyone who has helped out this year. Our pack needs leaders and volunteers to keep it going! Every position in our pack is a volunteer position. Our kids learn and have fun because we put the effort in to make sure these experiences happen. Please consider joining our leadership team and helping our pack grow so that our kids can have more great experiences!

Bowman Bay was a lot of fun! I am so glad we had great weather and great turnout for another fun family camp. As the busy summer gets underway, please signup for these events so we can keep track of families and those who attend!

Start out from the trailhead on a wide trail that meanders through forest, with trees young and old. Due to its popularity, this part of the trail has been the focus of numerous trail maintenance outings, yet there are still rocks and roots to contend with; that’s just the nature of the terrain.

At a half mile, freeway noise peaks as you pass under the elevated span of eastbound Interstate 90. Then at just over 1 mile is a popular natural feature known by various names: the Denny Creek Water Slide, Slide Rock, the Slippery Slab. This is the destination for many families, for frolicking and/or picnicking on a hot summer day. If this is your destination, see our hiking guide entry for Denny Creek.
At the water slide, Denny Creek is posted as “Impassible During High Water”. In normal flows however, strategically placed rocks offer a dry crossing. The trail re-enters pleasant forest on the opposite side, marked by a sign on a large tree that reads “Main Trail”. A quarter mile from the water slide, the trail passes through an area of lush vegetation then breaks out into the open, revealing two tiers of Keekwulee Falls, the main drop falling 90 feet into a steep ravine. In the morning, the falls can be seen glinting in the sunlight.

Gear:
– Scouts are encouraged to carry a pack with the essentials appropriate for their den year. Please consult your den handbooks to determine which gear they should carry.
– Feel free to bring appropriate gear to go swimming/wading in the water but also for the hike before.
– Please pack a lunch as we will likely be out on the trail during lunch time
– Water! Water! Water! Please make sure to have enough for the hike in and out.
NEW WEBELO Option! Interested in taking this hike into the mountains for an overnight backpacking adventure? Contact Jeff Patrick for more information.

Rescheduled Bike Ride!

TBD
Iron Horse Tunnel bike ride to Olallie State Park

We don’t have a date for this yet, but a tentative signup is here
Iron Horse Trail Bike Ride

Want to try a new adventure? Ride your bike thru an old train tunnel, down hill all the way to Olallie State Park! The path is made of compact gravel and is straight and level. It is cold and dark in the tunnel, so come prepared! Warm (layered)clothes and a light for your bike or helmet are a must. Reflective clothing is helpful too. The tunnel is 2.3 miles one way.

We will stop at the end of the tunnel and regather. Those who wish to turn around can do so. All others can continue on the slight downhill grade another 12 miles to Olallie State Park. We will plan ahead to leave cars at Olallie for carpooling back up to Snoqualmie Pass. Save the date! A sign up form will be coming out soon.

Make sure you bring plenty of snacks and water for the ride!

September Campout!

September 22nd-24th Renton Lions Camp
Our goal as a leadership team is to offer our scouts three outdoor camping experiences per year. Our summer campout is end of June (Family Camp), our fall campout is in September (Renton Lions Camp) and our Spring campout is in May.

Please save the date and join us for one night or both at the Renton Lions Camp. Or come just for the day! We will have a variety of outdoor activities, including hikes, songs and skits around the campfire, outdoor cooking and other den related activities.
