Pack Newsletter – October 2017

We hope you are all getting settled into your new routines. We have some fun events planned for this month and a couple of activities that are not pack based, but we thought you might be interested in them.

We are still signing up new scouts, so if you know anyone interested in scouting, please invite them to our Raingutter Regatta Pack Meeting on October 18, 2017 at 6:30PM.  Please note the change in time! We are starting at 6:30PM for more time for racing and awards.

We now have an online registration system available at www.scouting.org. Just type in your zip code and look for Pack 428.  And as always, go to www.pack428.com for information on our meetings, outings and the contents of this newsletter.

This weekend we have a hike to Franklin Falls scheduled on Saturday morning. Please sign up and join the pack for hopefully rain free hike! This will fulfill the hike requirement for the younger dens. Please sign up below.

In addition, our cubmaster Jeff Patrick wanted to remind you all that Brickcon 2017 is this weekend. If you have never been to Brickcon, it is a very cool event! For more information go to http://brickcon.org/.  If you would be interested in joining a group attending, please contact Jeff Patrick,

And my final announcement of the month…Remember to clean and save your best recyclables for making boats at our October pack meeting. Think materials that will float and make great little raingutter sized sailboats. This is a very fun activity!

Hope to see you all soon,

 Gina

October Hike – Franklin Falls

Saturday, October 7 9am-2pm

Hike: Sign Up Here!

Join us for a fun hike to Franklin Falls!

9am Houghton Park & Ride

We will meet at the Houghton Park and Ride at 9am and carpool to the trailhead. A Northwest Forest Pass is required to park at Franklin Falls—if you don’t have one, please make arrangements to get one beforehand or carpool with another family that has one!

http://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/franklin-falls

We will be headed out rain or shine, but let’s hope for a little sunshine and some beautiful fall foliage! Make sure you go over any hiking requirements your scout may be able to accomplish on this hike. Bring plenty of water and pack a lunch!

Franklin Falls is a beautiful two mile hike, roundtrip with only 400ft of elevation gain suitable to kids of all ages. The forest service has been doing a ton of work to this trail making it very accessible and family friendly.

A Northwest Forest Pass is required for the parking lot at the Franklin Falls trailhead. If you don’t have one, please carpool with someone who does have one! There has been a lot of work done to this trail in recent years and there is plenty of parking. There is a large parking area past the bridge that marks the trailhead for Franklin Falls that can hold 30 cars. If that one is full, head up to the larger parking lot, a half mile past the bridge and trailhead, where there is more parking available. There are no garbage receptacles at the trailhead so be sure to pack it out!

Driving Directions: From Seattle, head east on I-90 to exit 47 Denny Creek/Tinkham Road. At the top of the exit ramp, turn left and cross over the freeway. Go 0.2 miles and turn right at the stop sign onto Forest Road 58. The road crosses under the freeway, after driving 0.2 miles, turn left.

Continue straight on for 2.9 miles and about a half mile past the Denny Creek Campground there is a large paved parking lot on the right that can accommodate about 60 cars.

The trailhead can be accessed via a trail that begins near the bulletin board in the parking lot.

October Pack Meeting at Rose Hill Elementary: Recycling Regatta

October 18 6:30-8:00pm

Note the time change!!

Back by popular demand, we are hosting our 5th annual Recycle Regatta!  The boys will use their creative genius to turn ordinary recycle items into boats.  They will test their skills to see if their creation floats and then they will attempt to race it down our inflatable track using wind power generated through straws!  We had some awesome creations last year and are really looking forward to seeing their creative genius at work again!

A few ground rules:

·         Each scout must bring in CLEAN recycling material:  plastics and cartons of various sizes and shapes work great.  NO tin cans and NO glass.

START COLLECTING GREAT RECYCLABLES!!

·         The boat must be built at the Pack Meeting.

·         The Pack will provide duct tape, hot glue guns, corks and popsicle sticks.

·         Encourage your scout to look through your recycling materials in the coming weeks and pick out things that he could use.  Get his imagination spinning with ideas for this fun project.

·         We will set up work stations by dens.  Each scout will take his recycling materials to his table to share with his den.  Each den will have their own hot glue gun and duct tape.  We will need parent volunteers to supervise the hot glue guns and duct tape use at each table.

Dues!  Don’t forget to bring your checkbook and pay your dues at the Pack Meeting. If you haven’t updated your scout’s health form, we will have those on hand too! Let’s make Mark Nelson’s job easy get those dues taken care of! Thanks!

If the fees are a hardship for your family, please contact Gina Rose
