Pack Newsletter – September 2018

Welcome to a new year of scouting in Pack 428! We are excited to start up our pack meetings again on the third Wednesday of each month at Rose Hill Elementary. The upcoming pack meeting on September 19th is our official start to a new year and our Joining Night, where we welcome new families to our program.  Please help us get the word out!  95% of our pack is built through word-of-mouth. Invite your friends and let them know how much you love scouting! In particular, if you have a Lion (kindergarten) or Tiger (first grade) Scout ready to join the pack, be sure to let us know ASAP. Remember, we are now open to girls as well. We will be starting with a girl den of a variety of ages. As we grow, the girl dens will be split up by grade level just as in the boy dens.

Don’t miss the October Fall Kick-Off Family Camp at the Renton Lions Camp on October 5-7. Each den will be working on some of the first important steps for achieving their ranks. Try to attend the daytime portion on October 6th, even if you can’t stay and camp.

The first newsletter of the year is always a long one, so please bear with me, as we cover all the important details you need to know.

Sunday, September 16, 8:45am-1:00pm

Cherry Creek Falls Hike

Cherry Creek Falls Hike – 5 miles round trip – Elevation gain 450ft – Waterfalls!!
Originally the site of a logging camp in the first part of the 20th century, Cherry Creek Falls is
now a popular place for locals (and visitors) to cool off after the hike in. The 25-foot falls are the
final waterfall along Cherry Creek. The falls drop over a wide, rocky ledge into a large pool.

Parking is limited at the trail head so we will carpool.  Please meet at the Houghton Park and Ride and we will carpool from there.  We will leave the Park and Ride no later than 9am.

For more details and to sign up, CLICK HERE.

Wednesday, September 19 from 6:00-8:00pm at Rose Hill Elementary

Joining Night – 6:00-6:30pm immediately followed by our

First Pack meeting of the New School Year – 6:30-8:00pm – Carnival!

Pack 428 will be hosting an informational meeting for new scouting families at Rose Hill Elementary near the playground on Wednesday, September 19 from 6-6:30pm. We will present an overview of the program, answer questions and sign up new scouts. All families are welcome to attend and then stay for our first pack meeting of the year, our fall carnival.

Encourage friends to join!

We encourage you to personally invite any friends interested in scouting. Our goal at Pack 428 is to do our best to make sure everyone knows they have a local Cub Scout Program available to them – we don’t want kids to miss out on the fun simply because they haven’t heard about us!

Other packs have had great results when scout families personally reach out to friends during other activities, whether at school, at baseball, soccer, or even sending out emails to friends, etc. Feel free to forward this newsletter to them.

If you find someone who is interested in scouts, but cannot attend Joining Night, or someone who simply wants more information beforehand, please have them email one of our recruiting team leaders, Melinda Gray at melinda.chambers@gmail.com or check out our website at www.pack428.com.

Forms and Dues

Forms: Please let us know if there have been any changes in your contact information. If there have been changes to your insurance or medical alerts, you must fill out the BSA Medical Forms A & B for us to keep on file. This is to insure we have the necessary medical information in case of injury or accidents on all our Pack outings. Please fill the form out and bring it to the Pack meeting. Here is the link https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_AB.pdf. If you already filled out a Medical form for camp this summer, or last year and have no changes, then we have these on file and you are good to go.

Dues: September is the time to pay your annual dues! Please bring your pen and a checkbook to pay your annual dues – $100 per scout ($80 for Lions). The money we collect for dues covers the following items:

  • Payment owed to the Seattle BSA council for membership and Boys Life subscriptions.
  • Books, neckerchiefs and slides awarded to each scout at the June Picnic and Awards Ceremony as they advance to their next den level
  • Individual scout recognition and advancement patches, segments, belt loops, and pins
  • Payment for pack outings and events
  • Materials for pack meetings
  • Discounts for official camps

Need a scholarship?  If the fees are a hardship for your family, please contact our treasurer, Mark Nelson at mark.nel@frontier.com. We are willing to help out with any part of the pack fees that you may need help with. If you need help purchasing a uniform, we can help with that as well. Please let us know what we can do to help your child become an active and successful member of our pack!

October 5-7 at the Renton Lions Camp

October Family Campout!

Our goal as a leadership team is to offer our scouts three outdoor camping experiences per year. Our fall campout is at the Renton Lions Camp, our spring campout is in May (location varies) and our summer campout is Family Camp at the end of June.

Campers: Sign up here! There is no cost for this event!

For fall camp this year, we will be camping at the Renton Lion’s Youth Camp along the Cedar River in Renton, Washington. Join your friends for an opportunity to plan skits, take a hike, cook outdoors, sing songs around the campfire and spend the night under the stars.

We have reserved the entire camp from Friday afternoon, October 5 to noon Sunday, October 7. Spend one night, stay for the weekend or join us just for the day on Saturday (10am to dusk). There are plenty of covered areas for protection in case of rain, but our weather in early October is usually beautiful, right? Maybe bring a pair of boots and a raincoat just in case…

If you need a tent or other camping supplies, let us know, as many of our leaders are avid collectors of camping necessities.

The den leaders will contact you with activity plans for the weekend, but there is a perimeter loop trail for a short hike and a lesson in hiking essentials. There is a large grassy field for games. There will be a group campfire for dens that have a cooking requirement and of course the Bear Den boys will have a chance to earn their whittling chip so they can start carving soap animals or pointy sticks with their pocket knives. Bring a few bandaids… 😉

We hope to see everyone there!
